A Muslim would have been taught the five foundations of faith in Islam; the belief in God, angels, the Scriptures, the Prophets and the Hereafter. There are those who would add another one, the belief in Qada and Qadar, that everything both bad and good are from God. I have a problem with the sixth as I believe that only the good, come from God. Anything bad is your own doing. That is my understanding of the Quran. I will not blame God for any misfortune.
I have been wondering, why am I not reading the other Books of God? The Psalms in particular.
I cannot expect present day Muslims to study the other three if they, themselves, are Quran illiterate and have not started with the Quran.
Your Lord is the best knower of everyone in the heavens and the earth. In accordance with this knowledge, we preferred some prophets over others. For example, we gave David the Psalms. (17:55)
The reason given for not reading the other scriptures is that the scriptures have been corrupted. This is well narrated in the Quran. Still, there must be a reason for insisting followers of Abraham to read the other scriptures. The fear of being corrupted by the possibly corrupted scriptures is addressed by God by setting the order of precedence. Should there be conflicts between the Quran and the other scriptures, the Quran takes precedence.
What we revealed to you in this scripture is the truth, consummating all previous scriptures. God is fully Cognizant of His servants, Seer. (35:31)
Yesterday I read the first psalm. For those who has not started reading the Quran, do so.
