Fasting, abstinance, self restraint

Today isthe first day of Ramadan. The following is an extract ofthe translation (almost ad verbatim) of the Quran on the subject of Fasting (Yusuf Ali). Fasting has been decreed by God in earlier scriptures. Fasting is therefore not just  an instruction for Muslims but for all mankind. It is about self restraint, about being near to God and about glorifying Him.

Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may learn self restraint.

Fasting is for a fixed number of days, but if you are ill or on a journey the prescribed number should be made up in later days.

For those who are with hardship, there is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent, but if you want to give more at your own free will it is better for you.

It is better for you if you fast if you only knew.

Ramadan is the month in which was sent down the Quran as a guide to mankind. It also contains  clear signs for guidance and judgement. So everyone of you who is present in his home during that month should spend it in fasting. Again, if you are ill or on a journey the prescribed period should be made up in later days.

God intends every facility for you . He does not want to put you to difficulties. He wants you to complete the prescribed period and to glorify Him, in that He has guided you and perchance you shall be grateful.
