Netiquette – breach of it is uncouth, kurang ajar

April 26, 2009

Etiquette, is adab. Someone who lacks adab is called as Kurang AJAR in Malay, or uncouth in English. The prophet is the exemplary man and Etiquette is central in his teachings.

In the newly embraced media of expression ,the internet, we see a lot of  that, “breach of etiquette”.

The power of the click, is equated with absolute freedom. It is further compounded by the sms culture, the one liner. So it becomes a haven for the inarticulate, the spoiler, the baduts, the cut and paste expert. Combined that with the you versus Me, black against white, displaying behaviors which would certainly be despised by the Prophet.

Unfortunately with the internet  forum, the practice of netiquette, kurang ajar and uncouth behavior can only be controlled by the Moderator. If the moderator choose to allow absolute freedom,  there is nothing much we could do except to ignore, delete or move on.

The danger is that healthy discussions are hijacked and killed. Personally I disagree with that absolute freedom approach. In any community be it virtual or real, harmony is essentials, and the use of the net to encourage discourses to attract robust exchange of thoughts must not be sacrificed for the sake of one or two or for the sake of absolute freedom.

Put the pressure on the uncouth.

I have to say something on the KUGAN’s case

March 8, 2009

I just have to let it out. It was brutal, it was incompetence, it was inhumane, it was a failure of leadership.

It was brutal. Even if he was a criminal he did not deserve such torture. What has become of hadhari?

It was incompetence. It was plain stupidity. It was a total lack of professional integrity and I am not talking about the police, I am referring to  the keepers of the Hippocratic oaths. The learned, the knowledgeable, but lacking in integrity and holistic principle. Where is  the wisdom ? Lost in the pile of knowledge?.

It was inhumane. It was a total lack of justice.  Humanity was murdered in Gaza and in Taipan. But why on earth, SERDANG gets sucked into it?

It was a total failure of leadership. Instead of protecting the institution individuals are being protected. It was  a simple Crisis Management yet the leadership of the various institutions involved failed to respond appropriately. . The well tested and always proven,  effective response plan would have been to  dissociate, dissociate, dissociate. Promise Justice. Take action. But when, injustice is the norm, when the herd culture is the norm, the bearers of responsibility are likely to  blinded in their sight, the heart and the soul. I see nothing, I hear nothing, I have no conscience.

When religion is ritual, when the words of God are sold for pittance, when hypocrisy thrives on hypocrisy, even a simple case of leadership and governance become an issue. When patronage and moral corruption is one and the same thing, what is there left to do? Clean them up!!

DISSOCIATE, dissociate, condemn, condemn, get the culprit fast. Malaysia dissociates from the TAIPAN Police Investigation team. Malaysia dissociates from the CPO who defended his Policemen. Malaysia dissociates from the first pathologist and the SERDANG Hospital Director. Malaysia wants justice. Malaysia wants these people involved to search their souls.

If people entrusted with power and authority fail  in executing their  duties and responsibilities, the most honorable thing they can do  is to RESIGN!!!

Let us do that cultural transfer instead of just technology transfer. Bring the samuari sword!!! but let us be realistic. It will take some time they can accept harakiri as a cullture. For the time being a simple resignation letter would do.

Porn Bill in PORNOrogo(?) Land

November 3, 2008

Ponorogo is a district in East Java. Surabaya is the city nearest to the district. In the city centre there is a monument of a Ponorogo warrior. The Ponorogos are reknown for their warrior like physique. The latter Javanese migrants to the Malay Peninsular, those who came in the early 20th century mainly came from this part of East Java. They were the buffalo soldiers opening up lands in the peninsular.

My friend Najib aka JIBOGOR is a ponorogo. His kampung is Parit Ponorogo in Muar. He cheekily spelled it PORNOROGO, the land of PORNO. Is it really?

Indonesia is currently embroilled in a debate regarding the PORN BILL. There were oppossition with the fear that it would allow the misuse of the law to curtail religious freedom, to give tickets to the islamic fundamentalist to assert their definition of pornography, to curtail the expression of the arts, amongst others.

Are these oppositions justified? There are elements of chauvinism, that if it is islamic it would be supressing and unjust. The oppposition mainly come from the Balinese and the liberals of Jakarta.

The advocates of the Bill have been smart enough to avoid the religious arguments. Pornography is a serious social problem, they argued. The uncontrolled distribution of Pornographic materials have serious repercussion to society. The industry must not be allowed to set up foot in the country.  It must not become  PORNOland, let it remain as PONOROGO.

I personally believe that PORN is bad. I personally believe there is a clear distinction between art and PORNOGRAPHY.

It was heartening to read that under the definition of PORN in the proposed bill PLAYBOY is not deemed as PORN.

So, bring the Bill …………..

Datuk, dato’, dato seri, latuk, tan sri, tiang seri

October 25, 2008

Semalam Malaysia melihat satu lagi majlis anugerah.

Make Your Choice “Public safety OR FREEDOM” – Abdullah Badawi

December 17, 2007

WE WANT BOTH

What are we to become. The Prime Minister has given us the choice between Public safety and freedom. Many amongst us would be cowed into making the choice. What a silly, cowing proposition this is. We demand both, freedom and safety.

Granted, freedom has to be gained with responsibility. So is power! Power is to be used to ensure both freedom and safety to the rakyat. Power must not be used to supress, to cow, to sway public opinion, to bully, to make life difficult for people to exercise their freedom.

Wasn’t the the fight against the Malayan union won through peaceful demonstration.

Granted that the content of the memorandum by HINDRAFF are malicious and seditious. Charge them under the sedition act, but do not curtail the right to peaceful demonstration.

Do not bully us by creating unnecessary roadblocks to frustrate ordinary Malaysians to hate, dislike and feel bad about demonstration. Do not provoke peaceful demonstration. Do not send in SBs to be agent provocateur.

Do not cow us into making that choice. We want both.

BAD RUDE DIN – Yang Berhormat Celupar dari Kedah

November 18, 2007

Kali terakhir dia mengatakan pramugari AIRASIA berskirt pendek menunjukan TEROWONG mereka.

A letter from my 10 year old – the HOME library Asistant Manager

November 4, 2007

Note; I found this  letter nicely positioned on my pillow as I was about to call it a day. They were already in bed.

Dear Mr. E

We from the HOME libraray would love it if you could donate some money or air conditioner.

We need some money because we need to buy some chairs and stationery for the library.

We need the airconditioner because visitors to the library complained that it was very hot. So we were thinking about upgrading our wall fan. The second reason is our library is a big open space so we need to buy an airconditioner so it would be much more comfortable.

Thank you for your cooperation. Hope you would donate some money or buy the airconditioner.

Please inform us as soon as you can.

By,

Aiman E
